How Unusual To Stay Even At 180-Pounds

Hello weight losing fans...

It's The Same

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 180-pounds.
One year ago on January 29, 2008 I was 181.4-pounds.
I am holding steady.

Just think, I have been staying in and around 180-pounds for a year or more now, let's say around a year and three months.

It was never my intention to maintain at 180-pounds. I had hoped to get to 160-pounds. Only, it doesn't seem to matter anymore if I cut back the calories, or carbohydrates, my body is staying around 180-pounds.
Someone wrote to me and said this is my body's "Happy Weight."

NO Super Bowl Blow Out Meal For Me

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 180-pounds.
On this same day last year January 28, 2008 I was 178.6-pounds. That's up from last year; not by much.

Didn't I write yesterday that I would not bet that I would stay below 180? That certainly would have been a bad bet.

How To Survive That Big Television Event
I am visiting a family members home. She clicked on the TV near by the computer. One of the topics being so boldly discussed on a morning show is how to deal with those "Super Bowl temptations."

I have a quick answer for that question, or statement. Here it is: Stick to your diet.

Hey, we the preponderants seem to believe we can eat everyday as if it's a holiday. Well, I beg to differ with that notion. The reason I have excessive fat around my middle is because I thought that I could eat just like I could when I was twenty.
Over the years that over eating added up.

If I get back into the habit breaking my rigid food consumption every time there is a special event. Then it certainly won't be long before I begin to play catch up.

The same goes for you. You can't afford to deviate.

I am not a big sports fan. I think I may have sat with friends to watch maybe 4 Super Bowls in my life time. I am not fascinated with the game.

I also resent that men get paid so much money for something that to me has very little redemptive value.

I resent people pouring so much effort into the sporting events. I especially resent all the money that is stolen from tax payers so that big stadiums can be built.

That's all my thinking. However, I don't want to be big and round anymore. Therefore, my decision is to skip the big eating that comes along with the "Super Bowl."

But, you go ahead and eat that giant hamburger, and the bag of potato chips, all the side dishes, etc, etc. We'll see what you weight over the following days.

I Sure Wish Things were different.

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 179.2-pounds.

Whew... I thought I was toast a couple days ago with the 184.6-pounds. Do you remember that I wrote I had a bunch of corn bread for lunch one day, and that same night ate a chili hot dog? It only goes to show it was stuff waiting to leave.

On this day one year ago I was at 177.4-pounds. So I am off a couple pounds here. I am back under the 180-pounds target. That's a relief. Can I stay here? Ummm, I'm not taking bets on it.
I am back visiting the "House of Chocolate." This "House of Chocolate" Is my family members house. One never knows what I can get my sticky little fingers on here.

Oh those temptations,
What will I do?
My stomach cries out,
Feed me, feed me.
Every where I go,
And everywhere I see,
Those rich bounties of food,
Just for me.
My mind tells me,
"Don't you dare"
My heart says,
"Just a small portion,
Can't you spare?"
"It won't hurt you,"
So it says.
You can make up for it tomorrow.
Yet tomorrow never seems to be.

Oh, the struggle I go through.
The thoughts of how good it would be,
Only disaster looms ahead.
The digits tick up, and up.
Those pants, and shirts that will not fit.
The skirt that will not zip.
Yours not mine.

If wishes were true;
That song sung by the winsome cricket.
Seeing that star flying across the nighttime sky.
My thought of mounds of blueberry pie.
When my tastebuds were satisfied.
My stomach that no longer cries,
Feed me, feed me.
I am hungry.

That would be a wonderous day for sure.
When every mouthful no longer showed.
When I like every other human could be.
No longer running up that scale.
And fashion once again could be.

Alas it isn't true.
Food is my obcession.
Food is my dread.
Ah hah I say,
I can't eat that,
At least not today.

And in the late night shadows
On my pillow I lay,
Listening to rumbling,
And the growls,
The unsatisfied pain.
As I close my eyes,
In my my mind dance blueberry pies.

Keeping The Weight The Same For A Year's Time

Hello Weight Losing Fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 180.2-pounds.
On January 26, 2008 I was 181-pounds.

I am managing to stay around the 180-pounds. The last two days was apparently stuff waiting to leave, as it usually is.

Last year around this time I managed to reach 177-pounds. Tomorrow will have to be the day I match that record. Well, that isn't going to happen any time soon.

I am actually very happy that I am stable at this 180-pound target. It's not where I want to be ultimately. I was reading in the Atkins Nutritional Approach book, that the body seems to have a point where it stabilizes, and that no amount of dieting, short of not eating at all, will budge those pounds.

The only other thing that I can do is exercise. That might help me develop some muscle. That will in turn boost my fat burning power.
We'll see.

Too Many Carbohydrates, And Busting The Calorie Bank Eating Them

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 184.6-pounds.
That's way up. Ooops...

It all started two days ago. I had a large lunch with a friend. I did the totals for my calories for that day. I didn't go over the 1,500 calories. I did have a lot of carbohydrates, like French Fries, and Pita Bread.

Yesterday I had way too many carbohydrates for lunch. There was a dish of corn bread, and some biscuits. I chowed down on all of them. Ooops...
Late last night a friend of mine and I went to a fast food restaurant. I ate a chili dog.

So, all of that was in me this morning. OK, so much for getting down to 160-pounds. It sure doesn't look like I am headed out in the right direction.

More Thoughts About Embarking On The Atkins Nutritional Approach

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 180.6-pounds.
That's down from yesterday morning.

I don't know how it will look in the morning tomorrow. I had a extraordinary lunch today.

More Reading In The Atkins Book
Last night I did some more reading in my Atkins's Book. I was reading when someone embarks on the Atkins Nutritional Approach, he / she will have to give up forever the white processed flour, any kind of sugar, except from fruit, along with caffeine, etc.

Instead like Weight Watchers the Atkins People offer for sale Atkins Foods that are low in carbohydrates. Here is the problem. The food is more expensive than buying regular food.
Like Weight Watchers, the name on the package seems to dictate the price of the product.
Oh, and let's not forget, they sprinkle in some magic pixie dust.

I was also reading that once someone decides to do the Atkins diet, he / she is limited in the amount of carbohydrates they will eventually consume each day. It seems the average for most people is around 100 grams of carbohydrates.

That's not a lot of carbohydrates. Now, if someone keeps to eating fruit, and berries, along with nuts, 100 grams of carbohydrates can go along way. But, if you decide to eat some rice, or potatoes, you might get a cup of rice per day to eat.

It might be easier to use the Atkins Nutritional Approach to shave the pounds off. Then when the desired weight is achieved switch from counting carbohydrates to counting calories. This would include learning to count all calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrates.

I have been able to maintain my weight now for over one year. I do it by counting calories.

I could not stay with the Atkins program. It forbids ever eating a large blueberry muffin, or a piece of berry pie.

The reasoning is, "Well, you'll never crave sweets again." Ummm, excuse me, I haven't forgotten how delicious a blueberry pie with a big scoop of ice cream on top tastes like. All, the beef, and eggs in the world aren't going to make me forget that.

The Calorie King - Calorie Fat & Carbohydrate Counter

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 181.6-pounds.
That's up.

Before I left the house this evening to post I stepped up onto the scale weighing in at 180-pounds. This was after having eaten my breakfast and lunch, along with many cups of fluids.

I may be high again tomorrow though. I had two cups of vegetables, (green beans, and sauerkraut), along with 1/2 cup of fruit cocktail, and two scoops of vanilla protein. This will add about one more pound inside of me. I am not so sure that will be gone when I weigh in officially in the morning after I crawl out of bed.

We will see.

The Calorie King Calorie Fat & Carbohydrate Counter
Two days ago I purchased at the book store a new more in depth calorie counter.
I had one that I picked up two years ago, and only paid 99 cents for it.

This new book cost me $9.00. You can purchase it on Amazon.com for just over $5.00.
If you click the link on the top of my web page you can get it from the Amazon Store.

I like this new little book. I tried to get a picture of it to put in this post, only I couldn't figure out how to get it to link. I have had my friend help me in the past. Only, if he's not around I can't remember how he's done it.

This compact 4 inch by 6 inch rectangle is about 300 pages loaded with information about counting calories, and carbohydrate points for you weight watchers out there.

Enclosed you will find a restaurant guide for over 200 nation wide restaurants. These include the fast food joints like Taco Bell, McDonald's, Culvers, Burger King, Country Buffet, and other big name national chain restaurants.

In the opening pages I found advice about how to diet which included:
  • Weight Control Tips
  • Body Fat Distribution
  • Calories & Weight Loss
  • Portion Control
  • Recommended Fat Intake
  • Hints To Reduce Fat
  • Carbohydrate Tips
  • Sugar Consumption Advice
  • Tips for Overweight Kids & Parents
  • Sample Meal Plans
  • Exercise And Weight Control
  • How To Reshape Eating Habits
  • The Value Of A Food Journal
  • Diabetes Guide
  • Diabetes Menu Planning
  • Carbs & Glycemic Index
  • Calcium & Osteoporosis
  • Alcohol Guide

Following those opening pages and topics there is a very in depth guide to calorie counting many name brand foods, along with their portion sizes. Along side each item is it's name brand picture.

If you are a "die-hard Atkins Fan", or a "diligent Weight Watcher," along side the calorie counts are the numbers you need to count those Fat-Grams, and Carbohydrates.

Are you going to that open Buffet Tonight?
Carry this handy guide in your pocket to figure out how much damage you're going to do to your diet.

Are you yearning for a large chocolate bar?
Open up this handy guide and at least figure out before hand what you are ready to consume.
Perhaps if you look before you buy you will change your mind.

Did you want to order take out at that Chinese Restaurant?
Open this handy guide and figure out what you and that significant other are going to consume.
Then in a year you can look at each others bulging bodies and know you knew what you were doing when you chowed down on that Sweet & Sour Pork.

This handy guide will be my new companion from now on. With it, there isn't any fruit, vegtable, pasta, candy bar, or cookie that I can't zero in on for that calorie count.

Finally the author like me, advocates keeping a food journal. We both agree that if there is any doubt to the portions, then it should be measured or weighed.

I think if you really want to change your life style, and you are looking for a good reference companion to help you figure out what you are doing, then the Calorie King should be something you ought to consider buying.

Watch What You Eat

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 181.2-pounds.
That's down from yesterday.
OK...

Yesterday I went wandering around in the local book store. I was looking around just to see the books I wanted to buy, but decided not to. I was book window shopping.

I went wandering by the the row of diet books. I saw that the Atkins Nutritional Books were down to only about 5 available books, and one Atkins Nutritional Approach Kit. Above that was some of the South Beach Diet Books. Those too had only about 5 books left. Around those books were many more books related to dieting. Many of which had the words Low Carbohydrate, or Low Carb in the title.

I couldn't help but wonder how many people have caught onto the Low Carbohydrate Diet. It seems everyone has jumped onto that wagon. Why, it's been very successful for many people?

For years Doctor Atkins was scorned because of the Atkins's Diet Revolution. Then when it was discovered that fat people can lose huge amounts of fat on the diet and not die in the process, other doctors and authors hoping to make a name and money jumped onto the Low Carbohydrate Wagon.

There are still many Doctors, and authors who are stubbornly sticking to absurd diets that no one can follow. An example is the Blood Type Diet.

Here is my thought on all of that. It doesn't matter which diet program someone decides to embark on. He / She will soon find out that diet will have restrictions on food consumption.

My experience has been my diets: All diets come down to "food restriction."
With all diet programs a certain amount of discipline has to be administered.

I am not saying I agree with all the diet approaches out there. There are many that I think are insane, and virtually impossible to follow.

As I have written before, I did the Atkins Nutritional Approach. I lost 60-pounds. Only I regained 40-pounds of that back. Had I not taken action when I did, I would have gotten back to 260-pounds in short order.

Now, after having read some more material related to this Diet, I am reminded that it's my fault for daring to over eat those carbohydrates.

As I have written many times. If anyone hopes to lose weight he / she will have to learn to watch every bite of food put into that pie hole. Oh sorry....

When I left the book store last night I had purchased two books. One was a book written by Ann Colter. (Oh how dare I?) The other was a new calorie, carbohydrate food counter. I was going to bring the book with me in the library, only I left it in the front seat of my car.

I will comment on it tomorrow. I have to organize my thoughts to make them cohesive.

In the mean time I will bring you back to reality. You and I didn't get over weight for no reason at all. All actions, over eating, have a reaction, in this case getting fat. Those are the laws of physics, and chemistry. I didn't write them. I only proved they hold true.

No one pinned me down on the floor, then inserted a funnel, and poured the food in. The same is true for anyone who has gained weight. There was a cause. In my case, I ate more than I needed to survive, and maintain a stable weight.

Now, if someone decides to count calories, like I did, he or she will have success losing weight. If someone decides to reduce down to almost zero their carbohydrates in proportion to the fats and proteins, he / she too will have success losing weight.

The dynamics are the same. Our bodies need energy. When the glucose levels in the blood stream go down, the body looks for more. It gets it glucose from the readily available sources in the stomach, or it strips that glucose out of the fat reserves.

The end results are the same. Weight loss is achieved.

I keep writing this: "Eat less food." Oh ouch... It's that same boring, nagging three word phrase. Oh David can't you come up with something else?

Yes, "Watch what you eat."

There it's different. It requires discipline. It requires changing those old habits. Eventually it means a whole life style change.

I am not hoping to be profound. I am only espousing what I have read, and what I did to achieve my success.
My hope is that if there is someone out there who has given up, you will change your mind, and have back at it.

There are many, many people who have lost weight. Many have lost much more than I. They have also managed to keep it off. In the case of Jimmy Moore, he's kept his weight off for five years now. That's super-duper for sure. I wish there were many more like Jimmy.

Perhaps you will be the next one.

Answering The Comments Of Another Successful Weight Loser

Hello weight losing fans...

This is part-two of my posts today. My weights on the blog-post below. Oh argh for that...

I was unbelievably hungry last night and had some food late. As you can tell, that was in my belly.

I got a comment back from Jimmy Moore: the man who lost 180 pounds. I clipped it and added it in this post:

Jimmy Moore Commented:

THANKS for the link to my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog, David! Being on the Atkins low-carb lifestyle has become "normal" for me over the past five years since I lost 180 pounds on it. It's my permanent and healthy lifestyle change dedicated to making my health and weight manageable instead of the out-of-control state it was in when I weighed in at 410 pounds in 2004. While it may seem like you "give up" lots of foods such as birthday cake, the fact of the matter is you don't miss 'em once you start this plan, follow it exactly as Dr. Atkins prescribed, and then DO IT. Millions of people are enjoying the benefits of livin' la vida low-carb and will be for the rest of their long and healthy lives. Thank you again for the link and I wish you well in your journey!

I appreciate this man's diligence in writing back to me so quickly. He seems to be on top of his game when it comes to keeping up with his many web-sites.

Again I am linking to something else he writes: It's Jimmy Moore's blog site. From this link you can get to Jimmy's profile and then navigate from there.

It's obvious to me Jimmy is committed to sharing his experiences losing weight with people.

I am committed to seeing at least one life turn around. Perhaps he can inspire someone to lose that weight once and for all.

As I have written many times before, I have used the low carbohydrate diet program advocated by the Doctor Atkins's People. I have his books.

It's obvious the lifestyle change works as in Jimmy's Case. This might be something you ought to try as well.

But, I must give you some fair warning. There is no cheating on this program. If you do, then you won't see the results that are promised.

Jimmy claims if the Doctor Atkins's Diet, which is actually called the Atkins Nutritional Approach, is implemented properly, then there won't be any desire to consume sweets at all anymore. For me, I wish that were true.

I have known many people who lost many pounds using the High Protein, Fat Diet Program. Yet they, like me, still desire to eat something like a crispy cream donut.
I have watched people crash and burn after implementing the Doctor Atkins's Nutritional Approach.

This isn't to say that the diet is not healthy. It's not to say the diet can't be lived out, and the lifestyle followed. I will say it's a rigid food program.

I have the book Diet Atkins's revised. They have updated much of the philosophy surrounding the Diet Atkins's Diet. The new authors are from the Doctor Atkins's Diet foundation.

They like me wrote about consuming as much as a cup of green vegetables per day. They also wrote about adding in those healthy carbs.

That said, forget that donut. There isn't any room for that big glazed blueberry donut in this program. Processed sugars are off limits, as well as many other processed carbohydrates.

Also, the amount of food consumed has to be limited. Again, even with the Doctor Atkins's Nutritional Approach moderation is the key to success.

I wish, I wish, having been on the Atkins's Diet, I could say I never yearned for my mother's homemade stuffing on Thanksgiving Day. I wish I could say, I never wanted to eat a big pile of potatoes during a dinner. Alas I did. And I wanted my Ice Cream too.

If you can stick completely to this new diet life style, then go for it. For me, it's just out side of my desires. I like a bowl of ice cream sometimes.

I will also say, having lost 60-pounds, I have had the desired results that are espoused by the Doctor Atkins's people. My cholesterol dropped. My blood pressure dropped. My blood sugar dropped. My heart-rate dropped. I sleep better at night. I feel much better. I could go on with the benefits.

It's the amount of food we eat that gets us into trouble. I have proven that over these last two years.

Bye for now...

Read The Man Who Lost 180-Pounds

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 181.8 pounds. That's up.

Yesterday I was wandering around the internet and was reading different blogs. I wandered back to one web blog writer who I had taken down because my thinking was he wasn't posting anymore.

Well, I found out he is posting, only he took down his weight loss blog. His blog led a circle around to this blog or web page:

Jimmy Moore: a man who lost 180-pounds.

My Experience With The Doctor Atkins's Diet
Years ago, around 2002 I embarked upon the Doctor Atkins's Diet. I was about 260-pounds. I went on a low carbohydrate, and high protein and fat diet. I shed 60-pounds. I went down to around 205-pounds.

I thought that the Doctor Atkins's Diet program was wonderful. It was a great diet, that is only if it can be maintained. I like so many others thought that I could eat large amounts of meat until I was full. Initially that was true.

Something happened that surprised me. I actually reversed course doing the Doctor Atkins's Diet. In fact my body did a switch on me. I couldn't do the diet, and keep off the poundage.

I used to use a strip for urine analysis. It's called a Ketosis Stick. This stick is used to find Ketones in the urine stream. I used those strips to see if I was in Ketosis. If the strip turned purple, it meant I was in Ketosis, and I was supposedly burning off fat.

I used to turn the strips as dark a violet color as anyone could. Even so, I still kept gaining weight. I went weeks without any carbohydrates or sugars, and kept turning the strips violet.
I also didn't lose a pound more fat.

I eventually gave up and went back to my old ways. I was done dieting, I couldn't keep eating meat everyday for the rest of my life. I craved things like donuts, and apples, and other things.

My Doctor Atkins's Diet days came to a close, and I regained 50 pounds in about two years time.
One day I lost my balance and fell down a staircase backwards onto the pavement. I almost killed myself in the process. I was top heavy, and my knees were in bad shape, this resulted in my loss of balance.

A few days after that incident I woke up at 2 AM in the morning on a Thanksgiving Day. I had to be at work by 4 AM. I couldn't button my uniform pants up. I was in sad shape, and almost in tears from frustration.

I embarked on another program of weight loss. This one was far harder to do than the Doctor Atkins's Diet. I couldn't eat all the meat, and fat I wanted to. Now, I had to restrict my caloric intake.

This is where I am today, I am a calorie counter. I lost my weight not by using the Doctor Atkins's Diet, but by restricting my total calorie consumption.

I don't have a problem with using the Doctor Atkins's Diet. I am not even critical of this man that I am linking to. I will say this: It's very hard to continue eating meat, and small amounts of carbohydrates for all the rest of your life.

I kid you not, there is sugar in just about everything we consume. If someone is in phase one of the Doctor Atkins's Diet program, he/she must, must, must stay below 20 grams of carbohydrates. It only takes two teaspoons of sugar to blast those 20 grams out of the window.

In this day and age, no one can be sure in what concoction of food that 20 grams will be in. It may be in some coating on meat, or even pumped into the meat as a flavor enhancer.

In other words staying consistent on the Doctor Atkins's Diet isn't easy.

If you are like me, then the day will come, you will want to eat a big piece of birthday cake. If someone is on the Doctor Atkins's Diet, that's a real no-no. No, you can't eat a big piece of birthday cake doing the Atkins's Diet. You can't eat big pieces of anything sweet doing the Atkins's Diet.

I do. I eat giant pieces of birthday cake. I also have enough sense to leave everything else alone once I do.

There has to be balance in life. My thinking is if you want to be a carnivore all of the days of your life, then have at it. I can't anymore.

I also think that eating too much of anything isn't good for me. I don't think it's a good idea to let a couple pounds of meat and fat sit inside of my colon waiting to leave while it stinks up the insides. That's my opinion.

Go check out that above link if you want to learn more.

Don't Start That Diet, You'll Only Be Frustrated

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 181.6-pounds.
Oh, the shame...
My fans must be devastated...

I'm not.

Years ago there was a song Sherry Lewis sang at the end of her puppet show.
The lyrics went something like this:

This is the song that doesn't end
Yes it goes on and on my friend
Some people started singing it not knowing what it was
And they'll continue singing it forever just because
This is the song that doesn't end

Today I was thinking about some things that I have been reading on blogs lately. I have been talking to some of my friends as well. My one friend lost a lot of weight, and has regained some.

On one blog I was reading that person didn't want to have to watch every mouthful of food inserted into the mouth for the rest of her life.

As I contemplated what I was going to write today that song above kept playing in my heard.

I am like you. I wish I could wake up in the morning, grab the box of cereal in the cupboard, then pour out a big bowl full. I would love to fill up the dried cereal with enough milk that the cereal rises to the rim of the bowl. Then I would love to dive my spoon into that bowl of cereal and eat it without thinking.

I would love to wake up in the morning and make a big stack of blueberry pancakes. I would love to smother them with butter, and syrup. I would love to eat them until I were stuffed.

I would love to go to the local hamburger joint, order a large, thick, juicy hamburger, and French Fries, along with a chocolate shake. I would then wish to eat that meal until I am stuffed.

I would love to be able to forget about my daily logging of food. I would love to give up my daily weights, and meticulous calorie counting. I would love to forget it all.

I hate having skimpy, wimpy, breakfasts with one or two eggs, a bit of cheese, a piece of bread, and 1/2 cup of fruit.

I hate having to walk past the chocolate counter at the super market, and know in my heart, I better not buy that chocolate bar, because if I do, by sundown it wouldn't exist in it's current form. I will have eaten it.

It seems to me, that I have watched many people embark on a weight reduction plan, only to see them eventually burn out, and then quit.

This brings me to my song:
This is the diet that doesn't end
Yes it goes on and on my friend
One day I started doing it
Counting Calories, and weighing in
Just to lose some weight just because

This is the diet that doesn't end
Yes it goes on and on my friend
One day I started doing it
Not knowing how hard it was
And I'll continue doing it forever just because

This is diet that never ends.

Yes, it's the diet that never ends. One year from now, if I am still alive, I will still have to watch every bite of my food, or slurp of my drinks. Ten years from now, if I am still alive, I will still have to continue to watch everything I eat, and I drink.

It's because this is the diet that never ends.

I have first hand experience with a family member who throughout her life put on, and lost the pounds. She has now officially given up and quit. She is gaining weight, and straining to walk, and keep her energy up. She claims she doesn't eat that much food. Well, I beg to differ with her. I watch what she eats, and how she eats. She eats big bags of chips, and big bowls of ice cream.
She is old, and she is lonely. I can't fix that for her.

I can't fix your problems either. No, that's your cross to bare. I will tell you.
Once you start that diet, and begin to lose that weight: "It's the diet that never ends."

Don't start one if you aren't serious about making progress. You'll only end up terribly frustrated.

Bye for now...

Ooops, That Late Night Meal, It Showed

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 181.2-pounds.
That's up over 180-again.

Hmmm, what's that all about David?

Last night I came to visit family. I am now here at her computer. She wanted me to buy her a sub-sandwich last night. It was fast approaching 10 PM. Go figure....

The sandwich shop was closed. I went to the grocery store to purchase a supreme DiGiorno's Pizza instead. I got it home, and then tossed it into the oven. Forty five minutes later I pulled it out, and then cut it up.

I had no intention to indulge in this feast. Only, I was rumbly in my tumbly. It smelled and looked so good. I gave half to my family member who was glued in front of the TV, and I ate the half. The total calories for this late night snack: 720. Whew boy, that shot me over the days totals.

I knew this morning when I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale I would see it.

There you have it.
I like you have those moments in time where the temptations are over powering. Oh the shame...
I've let my one or two loyal fans down.
I am so guilty...
NOT!

Oh Please, the only one in this world who has a perpetually perfect body and appetite is that Dennise Austin Lady. I would clip on one of her exercise videos, only all the woman who check in on my blog would commit suicide because of sheer jealousy.

So, how do I rationalize having eaten this delicious pizza. Ummm, it had bread that's a carbohydrate. I had cheese, that was dairy. It had meat, that's the protein. It had tomato paste, green peppers, and other vegetables. There it was a well balanced diet.

So, I didn't do such a naughty thing after all, did I?

I Have A Higher Fruit Intake, And The Hunger Is Up

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 179-pounds.
That's down from yesterday.

This confirms my suspicions. It was all stuff that was waiting to leave. I wondered what was going on. I thought to myself, "Have I blown it so bad with the calories?"
I went through the Christmas season and ate a lot more, yet got back under 180-pounds much quicker.
I thought to myself again, "Perhaps it's because I decided to eat more fruit lately?" Yes, I have been trying to push towards a higher intake of fruits. I need protein, only everything has been staying inside. So, I thought, it's time to change the diet.
Things seemed to be getting worse, not better.

More Fruit And More Hunger
With the higher intake of fruits, it's now harder to keep those calories in line. With the protein, I could eat a meal, and feel pretty satisfied for a good part of the day, with no worries.
Well, adding in more bananas, apples, corn, etc, has given me fiber, and it's giving me more hunger. Yes, the hunger quotient has jumped up. Even with the sauerkraut, my hunger has doubled. It's frustrating for sure.

So, I have made up my mind to stay the course. Even with the hunger, I must stay at that 1,500 calories a day. My desire is still to reach that 160-pounds. We shall see.

Floating around 180-Pounds...

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 181.2-pounds.
That's up from yesterday. Again, it's just a hairs breath of poundage from this day last year, which was 181.8-pounds.

I wish it were less than that. It is what it is.

I think I have good reason too. Last night I was kind of hungry. I had a large salad before I went to bed. This morning I woke up at four in the morning. I didn't sleep well last night.
It's a long story.

I ate a small breakfast this morning at around 4:30 this morning, and had coffee. I went back to sleep. I weighed myself when I re-awoke and found this was the weight at 181.2-pounds. So maybe if I did not eat last night, and didn't eat and drink this morning, perhaps I would have been under 180-pounds. At this time it's really just semantics.

I am hanging with this 180-pounds. It's been this way now for over a year. I wonder what will help me break through. (Exercise !!!!) Oh that's what I've been told.

OK.... It's diet, and exercise. Diet is the real key. I can run, and jump all day long. If I don't control my eating, I will still gain weight.

Go find a weight lifting book. The people who are trying to get cut so that the definition of the muscles is pronounced, cut back back on their carbohydrate intake, and increase the protein intake. They also reduce down the size of the portions.

It's the diet that eventually trims out the fat from in between the muscles. Oh, I can increase my muscle mass. I can exercise so I expend more calories. Only, if someone has a life style where he or she isn't able to exercise, the it's the diet that matters. It's less calories in that gets the fat off.

Counting Calories Does Work

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 180.2-pounds.
That's up from yesterday. It's down from this time last year at which I weighed 182.6-pounds.

I am on an even keel here.

Counting Calories Doesn't Work - Who Said?
Yesterday night I was wandering through the book store. There was a rack in the isle filled with books that had been discounted for clearance. One of the books was about losing weight. I don't remember the title because I wasn't paying close attention to trying to remember it.

When I mentally discount something, I automatically let my mind discharge the thought. In other words, I forgot.

I do remember this one phrase in the book which stated: "Counting calories doesn't work."

Well, I am here to say counting calories does work. I know it works, because I have been doing the calorie counting for two years now. I have managed my food consumption quite well by keeping a written record of my food consumption.

I can't think of any other kind of system I have tried that has made me so successful as I have been these last two years.

I have read many books about weight loss. I have tried many techniques. None of them has been successful.

My system is easy to follow. It's not easy to apply. It's because denying food to myself when I was hungry was a real mental struggle.

I was tempted to purchase this book, and read it. Only, just that one statement about counting calories turned me off.

Here is how I count my calories. I make a mental note about what I am drinking or eating. I try to size it up. If it's a fluid then I try to figure out how many ounces it is. If it's food, then I try to figure out how many cups it is. I compare the food to known objects, like a deck of cards, or a tennis ball.

I then write down what I ate. Let's just say, I can't figure out the calorie count of what I ate. At the very least, I have a written record of what I ate, or what I drank.

My system isn't perfect. It gives me a rough idea about what my diet has been.

At the very least, my system keeps me alert to everything that goes into my mouth. Which is what anyone who is trying to lose weight should be doing anyway.

Everyday when I crawl out of bed I head to the bathroom to weigh myself. Yes, I weigh myself everyday.

My limits are self imposed. I don't limit myself to the variety of food that I consume. I limit myself to the amount of food I consume.

I think diets that are highly restrictive to the kind of food someone eats don't work. I don't know anyone who can give up ice cream, and birthday cake forever. I don't know anyone that forfeits their favorite foods forever.

It's easier to have the favorite food, but to limit the quantity. This has been my experience.

I am convinced that most people are wreck less with their food consumption. Why do I write this? Well, take a look at all of the chubbies out there. They don't pay attention to what they eat.

I know people close to me who are like this. I know one person who ate a large bag of Tostitoes on a road trip heading home. This person told me, "I don't eat that much."

Hey, wake up. Unless someone has a medical illness, they are fat because they eat too much.

So sorry, I had to write that.

Even Stevens On That 180-Pounds, Not Up, Not Down

Hello weigh losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital scale weighing in at 180-pounds.
That's below the 183-pounds I weighed this time one year ago.

OK, I am hugging that 180-pounds.

Something happened to my other number counter. One day I opened up my blog site only to find the number counter was no longer there. I didn't accidently wipe it out. I think that it was disabled for some reason. The web site states it has the right to disable number counters used from their web site. So, I think that they disabled it.

OK.. I AM Up Some

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 183.2-pounds.

OH David, you're crash landing. OH, you have given up.

Me: Ha, it's just about the same as this day one year ago when I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 183.8 pounds. Well, it's just a tiny bit less.

It's easy to explain. There was this really, really, really giant donut last night, and I ate it. OH, just kidding you.

Actually, someone invited me to have some turkey soup last night at around 8 PM. I had two bowls of Turkey Noodle Soup, a slice of oat bread, and a small slice of cheese cake. This food was sitting in my guts this morning when I weighed myself.

Yesterday when I finished my post at the library I weighed myself just for giggles because I was feeling rumbly in my tumbly. I weighed just under that 180-pounds that I have been sitting at.

I am not worried about this. Also, it's just about the same as last year. That's pretty good.
Again, I will write, I am not in a big hurry to shave off that last twenty pounds. Someday I will get there.

I was talking today with a friend. We were talking about what it means to eat sensibly. Well, that's a real good question to ask. Here is my answer: I don't know.

I can not determine for you how many calories you should eat to begin to lose weight consistently. You could need 1,200 calories, or you could use 2,000 calories.

I am not naive either about the notion most of us have some sort of sweet tooth. Some people can't leave the chocolates alone. Some people have to have ice cream.

I am not going to tell you that on every single day that I have been working to lose that 60-pounds I was perfect.

My friend was saying that I am not a 100% effort guy with my weight loss. OK...

So you are? Oh please give me a break.

Let me explain something to you. If you're too rigid with your eating program, then one day you will completely abandon it. Oh, you think I am kidding. Just look at all the fatties out there in Hollywood, California.

Look at Oprah Wingrey. She has regained 40-pounds. She said she gave up the food program that she was on. Oh really. I once read the list of food she consumed during her so called diet regimen. There wasn't any room for that sweet tooth. I wish that I could find the magazine I read the article in.

Here is my point. I don't know what a good diet is for you or anyone else. I know this: If you will cut back down on the amount of food you consume, then you will lose weight. This is what I have been writing all along.

About a year ago I wrote a blog post called the Snicker Bar Diet. I am sure for the food pureists out there that raised the hair on the back of the neck. My point in that post was I could eat a Snicker Bar that was 450 calories, three times a day. I would lose weight.

I also wrote that wasn't the most beneficial meal program out there because some essentials were missing.

I am hard pressed to tell anyone to eat only green vegetables. I am hard pressed to tell anyone to do only the Doctor Atkins's Diet. I am hard pressed to tell anyone to be so rigid with that food consumption. I didn't do it for a long period of time.

It was only the initial stages of my weight loss season that I disposed of all the things around my apartment that really tempted me to eat beyond what I ought. I experimented later, and developed that will power to say no.

When I went back in my postings for last year, I read what I wrote for January 5, 2008.
I tried to recopy the post into this blog. Unfortunately, I am not so adroit at using blogger yet. I still mangle stuff when I cut and past.

That post is in the archives on the left. If you want to know my sentiments about what I think about losing weight then you can go back and read it.

I am going to some up what I wrote in one short sentence: "Losing Weight Sucks." Got it?

The rigid diet regimens and eating right sucks. Avoiding the donuts when everyone around is eating one sucks. Avoiding that Whopper Hamburger, Chocolate Shake, and Large French Fries sucks.

Not eating some of the cookie dough while baking the cookies for the bizarre, Sucks.

Giving up my beer, Sucks. I hate it.

How else am I going to put it? Oh, you're so disciplined eh? Yeah, you have it all figured out. Yeah, please leave me alone then, because I don't have a lock on all the food strategies.
I don't have a lock on avoiding cookies.

There are some days, some days I eat.

I have a question, why is it that for over one year, I have kept my weight pretty much around 180-pounds. Could it be because I am not so rigid that I'll make myself crazy? Could it be, I am gentler and kinder to me? Could it be?

Go ahead: cut yourself off from everything. Yeah, play the food fascist. Then I'll see you crash just like everyone else does.

Go ahead, get into that real strict exercise routine. Yeah, go out and exercise like a fiend. Then when your schedule changes, you'll get out of shape just like the rest of the people out there.

Nope you're eating has to fit with-in the parameters that fit you. The easiest way to do that is to count those calories. Keep a close watch on the weight everyday. If you see a problem, then adjust right away. Don't wait for the weekly weigh in. It's too late then.

Don't take the numbers on the scale personally either. They are just numbers. Those numbers can vary by as many as 5-6 pounds in one day. Simply because there is fluid and food inside that hasn't been digested yet.

I am not you, and you are not me. If you want to lose weight, the easiest thing to do is just cut back how much food you consume. Oh, you could go on one of those high protein diets, like the Doctor Atkins's diet. In the end, you'll still have to watch how many calories you consume.

Hey I Didn't Make Up The Height And Weight Charts

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 180.4-pounds.
OK, that's up over the 174-pounds I hit over a week ago.
Ah, but it's better than this time last year. Last year on January 4, 2008 I was 185-pounds.

I thought for sure I was going to be less than this today. I forgot late last night I was chomping on carrots. I had a big bag of carrots in the bottom of my refrigerator that were beginning to go bad.
Late last night I decided since I could not sleep I would salvage what was left of the carrots, cut them up, and store them in cold water.
As I was cutting them up, I was chewing on some.

Someone Asked Why Do Guys Want To Get So Skinny?
Today I opened my blog to find this question in the comments :
" I have no idea why men want to get so skinny. How tall are you to want to get down to 170? Are you still going by the old weight-height scale? There is a new one by age. "

Here's my answer. First; I have a fat mid-section. This is fat, and fat does not convert to muscle. Fat must be burned off. Second; I did consult recent height and weight charts, and BMI charts.

According to the charts, and the Body Mass Index (BMI) charts, I am still considered to be overweight. I have a Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale that tells me my BMI. It confirms that I am at between 24.5 % - 26% body fat. This is considered over weight.

Here is what the insurance health charts (current) for my age want for a 5' 10" male:
5' 10"
144-154 -small frame
151-163 -medium frame
158-180 -large (heavy) frame

I have what is considered a small frame.

Are you aware that the insurance industry rates people according to a standard like this? I am considered overweight by the standards of the insurance industry.

I am not being some neurotic person regarding my weight. I am being careful not to over due this weight loss project of mine. I am also aware that many people who attempt to lose weight do so in a destructive manner.

For example: A woman where I work who isn't much older than I am lost a tremedous amount of weight. She looked great. I wondered how she lost so much weight so quickly. She ate frito chips three times a day. Now, that's absolutely idiotic. Not only so, but she is putting that weight back on again. The first place it's showing is inside her gut (stomach).

I am sure to eat plenty of protein. I eat my greens. In fact, on most days I eat at least one cup of green beans each day. Lately, I have been eating saurekraut on most days as well.

These foods provide bulk to keep me from being excessively hungry, and they provide me with fiber. You know why that's good I am sure.

It seems my body has set itself here at the 180-pounds that I acheived just over a year ago. I just eat on most days around 1,500 calories each day, and then here I sit at 180.

I have tried for over a year to break through and get down to around 170-pounds. There have only been a few days that I got under 175-pounds.

This is where my body wants to be. To be honest, I like it here. I certainly feel much better than I did this time two years ago.

I'm Better Than Last Year

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing 181-pounds.

Oh David, what have you done? Weren't you at 174-pounds? What happened? Oinker, you are....

Me: Relax, I stepped on the scale at 179.2-pounds just before I came to write this post today.
Tomorrow, I will be back under 180-pounds.

Apparently what I have been writing all along seems to be true, "One or two days of feasting a diet does not break."

Let us not forget, I've been at this now for about two years, and two months. Oh, and let's not forget on this day last year, I was 183.6-pounds. So I am down two pounds from last year.

I also saw that on January 2, 2008 I was 186-pounds. So, I think I am doing pretty good here.
I am less than this time last year.

I kind of know what I am doing.

Speaking of which, knowing what you are doing that is, are you making your weight loss diet program simple to follow?

Here is what I mean: Are you looking at the portion sizes that you eat regularly and trying to figure out how to get them just a little bit smaller?

Here is what I mean: Instead of eating that whole tube of Pringles Potato Chips, just eat 15 for a total calorie count of 150 calories, instead of 1000 calories for the tube. Yep the tube of Pringles Potato Chips is over 1000 calories.

Here is what else I mean: Don't waste your $12 to $15 dollars at the local buffet. Avoid the buffet all together, unless of course you plan on only eating really small portions of everything. Then even that's too tempting.

Here is what else I mean: You need to write everything you eat down. You have to try to guess the portions sizes. Compare the meat portion to a deck of playing cards. Compare the mashed potatoes to a golf ball, or tennis ball. Try to estimate is this 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, or 1 cup.

You know what else I mean: You need to pay attention to everything you eat. Yep, if you are serious about getting off those pounds, then you have to keep an eye on everything you stuff into your mouth.

That's what I mean.

Oh, but David, you are just so boring. Yep, I am. Hey Denise Austin has some great exercise videos on You Tube, go watch them. Don't concern yourself with my dribble.

Yes, losing weigh is monotonous for sure. It's so mundane you know.
Hey I agree. Only, no one stuffed your mouth full so you got to looking like a beach ball. You did that.
And only you can undo the damage. Yes, only you.

It's like quitting the other bad habits we have. Oh how dare you write that. Over eating isn't a bad habit.

Me: It's a habit. What makes it bad is the results. In this case the habit is stretching out your shirt and pants.

Do you know what I mean?

One day at a time. One bite at a time. That's the only way you are going to lose the weight. And, if you are a real buffalo weight wise, expect to take a long time to get it off. I mean a long time.

People fail when they expect too much, too soon. I don't know why anyone would think he/she should lose more than a pound, (maybe two) a week. Most people didn't put on weight that fast. That's right. Your weight gain was a slow progression. Most people only gain about 2-3 pounds every six months. This means most people are only putting on ounces each week.

Then suddenly they expect to lose all the weight in a six month period. Here is what is so sad: The ghouls in the weight loss industry put out those kinds of expectations. I was looking at an add in a magazine that read "lose 10-pounds in one month."
What?

Yeah lose that kind of weigh month in an month out. We'll be going to your funeral. That's
because the heart muscle will quit.

I haven't written this statement in a while: "Don't kill yourself trying to lose the weight."

Don't make up these goals, plans, resolutions, etc... for the New Year that really don't make sense.

If you can lose about a pound a week, that would be ideal. So, if you are like I was, I lost 60-pounds in one year. That was just a little over one pound per week that I lost.

I didn't starve myself physically to do it. Oh, I felt like I was starving. That is only because my body was in the habit of being fed until it was satisfied.

I had to stop eating until the hunger disappeared. If I ate that much food, it was too late. I had already consumed too much.

I had to predetermine ahead how many calories I could consume for the day. Then I ate accordingly.

That's not too complicated is it? You can do that, right? Maybe you can't.

OK, that's too complicated. Eating less is way too hard. OK, then do the low carbohydrate diet. Yeah that will do it. I did that. I lost weight. It's still comes down to portion sizes.

OK, do some other fad diet. Let's see if you can maintain that.

Nope you won't, the only thing that can really be maintained is, "EAT LESS FOOD."

Go ahead, try it. I mean really do it. I'll bet you'll lose weight.
Oh, and believe me, I hated having to do it that way. I like to eat too.

Hello weight losing fans...

Today I stepped up onto the Magical-Mystical-Digital-Scale weighing in at 181.4-pounds.

Aah what happened David? Did you fall off the wagon? Ho-Ho-Ho Christmas got you huh? Ha, we knew you couldn't hang in there. Ha, you're just like all the rest of us. No guts, and no will power. Go hang your head in weight loss shame, you Oinker. Yeah, I am never reading your blog again.

You keep saying you're going to get down to 160-pounds. You can't even get down to 170-pounds. You have the nerve David to lecture us. Ho-Ho-Ho...

Me: Ummm I'm so sorry to disappoint my fans... I'll never do it again.

Me: NOT! Come on folks. I think I've done spectacular here. I got through Christmas. Then on the new years day, I went to town. And, the day after I did as well. I think it was all those beers.

On New Years day I decided to take a one day trip up to Wisconsin. I was visiting my cousin. She had a bunch of food put out for her son and friends to celebrate the new year. She had Italian Potato Pasta Dumplings, Italian Sausages, chips, and other food. She had a table filled with cookies and candy.

Speaking of candy; did you try the new Nestle' Crunch Bar With Caramel? Oh it is so good. It's 200 empty calories. Oh, but you'll die with delight eating it.

Back to my story: So, on New Years Eve, after I had very carefully planned my food for the day, I blew it all later.

I still haven't been able to tally up the calories. Oh, again I have a general idea what I ate, but some of the calories I can't account for.

When I got home on New Years Day I went to a friend's home. She made a turkey dinner with all of the fixings. Oh, it was good. I must say I brought in the New Years with some memorable feasting.

I thank God we live in America. Around most of the world, people don't eat like this. Around most of the world, people don't have the variety we have. This is truly something to say Thank You God for.

Here I sit two days later. Just three days ago, I was at 177.8-pounds. Now I am up over 180-pounds for the first time in months. It makes me wonder, will I ever see that 170-pounds?

NO...not if I keep eating like a little piggy. Oink, oink...

Again, let's not forget where I was.

Could I do better? Sure. Will I do better? Maybe. Am I going to hold the line? Probably.

Let's see.

Last night I stepped up onto the scale and gasped when I saw the weight. I am not going to tell you what it was. By the morning, most of it had disappeared. It was all flushed away in the early morning.
